Classic Skepticism: The Amazing Randi vs. Maureen Flynn

Here's a classic clip of James Randi from an unknown television show back in 1991. In it he takes on "psychic medium" Maureen Flynn, the Jonathan Edwards of her time.

It's interesting to see an unedited cold reading like this. It's very telling when she asks for someone attached to the name Taylor, the third most common surname in the UK, and describes a spirit that died with something over his mouth (raise your hand if you know someone who died in a hospital with an oxygen mask on). It's funny to see all of the complete misses too ("Do you know James?" "No, sorry." "How about Doris" "No..." LAIL)

It gets more interesting in the second part when Randi confronts one of Maureen's regular marks clients who made the mistake of giving Randi a recording of one of her readings. The rationalization by Ms. Flynn and the other psychics in the audience are just stunning. You can almost see the fear of losing business in their eyes.

This was a show called "James Randi: Psychic Investigator". There are some more episodes on Google Video, and a Google search yielded many torrents of the show.

Thank you for that. I don't know why but it isn't listed on Randi's IMDB profile.

I've seen Maureen on stage and I've interviewed her twice for local radio & newspaper - for me the jury's still out. However for a very reasonable (ie small) fee she came to my old house to see why my two year old son was being bothered by an unseen man - not only at night but daytime too - he knew nothing about her visit but the 'episodes' stopped immediately. My impressionable influence? Maybe, but I'm not too easily spooked, I'd never have a problem walking through a graveyard at night, I'd be more concerned about living nutters than the dead.
The fact is there's always grey between black and white - we don't know definitively, and I'm equally suspicious of those who protest too much on either side.

ive been to see maureen in her house as a client. she had very clear contact with both of my grandparents, named accurately everyone in my family and what they were doing at the time and relayed some information from my grandmother that was extremely intimate and also phenomenally helpful, nurturing and healing to me. it was in such great detail that it was relayed, also taking on my grandmothers verbal intonations and style of talking, jargon, words she used etc. that i was left in no doubt whatsoever that my grandmother was talking to me. to the sceptics i say, if maureen had researched all that informtion about me and my family at such a deep level using technology and spy techniques then she would have to either be mi5 with bugs everywhere OR some kind of genius. I dont doubt her ability to accurately connect with spirit one tiny bit. i am 500% convinced of her authenticity. i have seen several psychics in my time but Maureen is by far the best. she deserves the enormous respect and reverence that she commands everywhere she goes. her healing work is divne indeed helping hundreds to overcome grief, confusion, depression and all kinds of painful states. the lady is incredible.

I am Maureen's son. I accompanied her to the James Randii show and sat in the audience. This was not a fair test, the show was rigged, and I could not believe what was edited out, not just for Maureen but from other people on the show. Excellent information was delivered, but the show was edited to make everybody look stupid. The audience, who seemed generally neutral at first, actually booed Randii at the end as it was clear that this was NOT a balanced investigation, but a sideshow. TV needs a genuine, unbiased investigation into mediumship.

Thank you, sir, for your obviously unbiased opinion. I'm sure that financial gain and family honor had nothing to do with your feelings on the subject.
